2. DID YOU KNOW THAT 12% OF SCHOOL AGED RESIDENTS ON MERCER ISLAND DO NOT ATTEND MISD?
Did you also know that's a completely normal number? For the affluence in our area, it's a low percentage. MISD has 3900 amazing students enrolled. Historically, ~12% of students in private school is a normal percentage for Mercer Island. There are certainly students who are enrolled in MISD schools that also receive private tutoring or instruction. This has also been standard for many years. There is no "exodus" from public to private, just examine the data. It's absolutely true there are fewer students enrolled, and that is impacting both public and private schools. Look at the enrollment data for students living on Mercer Island. There is no data showing a trend of leaving public to go private. The percentage attending private remains consistent. Yes, there was open enrollment in 2024-2025, and 40 students came from off Island to MISD to specific grade levels that had capacity. Ian Henry, MISD Communications Coordinator, would appreciate hearing directly from families who've chosen to send their children to private schools. 3. DID YOU KNOW THAT SCHOOL ENROLLMENTS ARE DOWN ACROSS NEARLY ALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS?
ALL of our peer school districts have declining enrollment. Well, Lake Washington is up by 1%. MISD thought that the kindergarten class would be smaller this year because of declining birth rates, but to the district's surprise, they had more kinder enrollment than anticipated! The post-pandemic drop in student enrollment seen on Mercer Island has also been seen in neighboring districts. In early 2023, public school enrollment in the four-county Puget Sound region (King, Kitsap, Pierce, and Snohomish Counties) was still about 23,000 students below where it was in October 2019, prior to the start of the pandemic. In King County, enrollment is about 13,000 fewer students than it was before the pandemic. We don’t have control over how many babies are born each year or how many families live here. We do have control over our value proposition: a school district with buildings that support our student's learning experiences. |
